Study to Show Yourself

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)

The Shack

Part 2 of this lesson about Bible Knowledge continues with our current theme: Accountability (responsibility for our own actions). We are accountable to God for what we say and how we say it. This is manifested based upon our knowledge of the Bible.

In the Book of Deuteronomy, we learn basic principles, through Moses, with regards to teaching and sharing God’s Word. In Chapter 6, verse 1, he encourages us to remember God’s Word and teach it to the next generation:

Commandments – “moral character” (regulates our behavior)

Statutes – “principles” (knowing right from wrong and that will influence our actions)

Judgments – “verdict” (what is rendered as a result of an action)

Because there is an expectation that we teach God’s Word so that the next generation will live out the Word.

In verse 7, we are instructed to teach consistently. As our Bible Knowledge increases, and we pass along what we know to the next generation, the following happens:

  1. We help them to know that there is a revelation of God – His eternity, His plurality (God in 3 persons), His unity (One Lord)
  2. We help them to know that there must be a response to God’s revelation – a total response of love with all of one’s being (heart. soul and mind)
  3. We help them to know that there must be a 3-fold responsibility – God’s truth will govern their heart, our homes, and their habits/conduct.

Prayer: Dear God, I know that I must study Your Word to understand Your principles, commands, statutes and doctrines. Teach me how to make time to study and apply Your Word to my life. I need You. Amen.
